Yerevan, Armenia – The capital city of Yerevan has undertaken an unprecedented volume of greening work in 2025, resulting in the establishment of 13.5 hectares of new green spaces. This significant expansion was announced by Armen Begoyan, Director of the “Greening and Environmental Protection” non-commercial organization of the Yerevan Municipality, during a press conference held at the “Armenpress” press hall.
Extensive Greening Efforts Across the City
Begoyan highlighted that the work was multifaceted, involving both the improvement and greening of existing parks and gardens, as well as the creation of new green areas in locations that had lacked trees for an extended period. “In 2025, we planted 4,500 trees and 35,000 evergreen shrubs,” said Begoyan. “I would like to emphasize the figure that 13.5 hectares of green space have been established during the year. Please note that these 13.5 hectares are areas where there was no green space at all; in other words, a green zone is being established from scratch.”
He further stressed that the efforts to create new green spaces also included areas on the outskirts of Yerevan. This is considered crucial for air quality, as these new forest areas will help reduce the transfer of dust from surrounding regions to the capital.
Yerevan’s Green Fund Reaches Soviet-Era Levels
“Thus, in the last 3 years, Yerevan has increased its green areas by 60 hectares,” Begoyan noted. “Here I must mention an important fact. Adding to this figure the restoration of existing green areas that were in poor condition, we can say that the data of the capital’s green fund have reached the indicators of the Soviet period.” According to Begoyan, during the best period, Yerevan’s green fund amounted to 908 hectares. “If we base ourselves on the data of already existing green areas and add the figures of newly created areas, we get 910 hectares,” he stated.
Begoyan acknowledged that while many well-known green areas from the Soviet era now have buildings, the city authorities have compensated by establishing green zones in other locations. A significant focus of the greening process has been on evergreen trees. During winter months, the green fund largely becomes dormant, leading to air quality issues. Increasing green spaces with evergreen trees is one of the key tools to combat this problem. This year, 1,200 evergreen trees were planted.
Irrigation System Improvements Crucial for Sustainability
Armen Begoyan also reported that substantial work has been carried out to improve the irrigation system and create new networks. This is considered vital for the restoration and sustainability of the newly greened areas.
